In its chemical structure, iodine primarily exists in the form of triiodide ions, bound by hydrogen bonds formed by the carbonyl groups of two adjacent pyrrolidone rings in the polymer. This complexed form can exist in both aqueous and non-aqueous media, significantly enhancing the solubility of iodine.
